Ah yes, I recall those glorious days of frolicking about the neighborhood in my terrifying costume, bag in hand. Fortunately I now have the fun of dressing up my daughter in spooky costumes and running her around from door to door. We love trick or treating together on Halloween.
To be Princess Jasmine, all you really need is a top, some baggy pants and gold jewelry. View screen shots of the Disney movie Aladdin to see how this colorful heroine is dressed, and go from there. This image on the right can help you out too, and the costume itself can be found here.
Jasmine’s Top
Look for a blue or aquamarine bikini top, and start from there. If you are handy with a sewing machine, look for strips of gold fabric, and stitch the top and the bottom of the bikin. You can also create gold arm loops to drape over the upper arms, and attach diaphonous fabric to these loops to create sleeves.
Another way is to look for a snug-fitting blue shirt, then carefully cut a strip off from the bottom to show your belly.
Jasmine’s Pants
The pants are a lot easier to find. Simply go to a second-hand store and look for parashoot pants! These baggy pants are perfect for this costume, and luckily, being a glitzy 80′s style, they will likely be shimmery satin as well. The only difficulty will be finding a matching top.
If you can’t find matching colors, it’s time to get your hands dirty. You can die the fabrics in the same color, and there are dye kits where you simply add the die to your washer and wash your load. Otherwise, follow the instructions on the box and get a pair of rubber gloves ready.
If you have some gold fabric left over, stitch it over the waist, creating and elegant gold trim.
Jewelry
One word – gold! Jasmine is a princess, after all, and wears lots of gold. Wear a gold tiara, or a blue crown that matches the color of your outfit with gold inlay. Add gold rings, a necklace and armbands. For earrings, look for large, hooped jewelry to wear.
Wig
If you don’t have long, thick black hair, it’s time to invest in a wig. After donning it, take some blue fabric that matches your
clothing and wrap the back of the hair into a pony tail. Jasmine actually does this twice, so if your hair is long enough, go ahead. Otherwise, one hairband is certainly enough.
Shoes
If you can’t find matching blue Arabic shoes with a curled point, blue ballerina shoes or gold high heels are an excellent alternative. When looking for shoes and you wish to keep as close as possible to the original, look for something called “dancing flats” – these are the easily recognizable form-fitting shoes with no heel. Bonus points if they are embroidered!
