Released in 1992, Aladdin is one of Disney’s classic hand-drawn cartoons. Drawn in the fine Disney style and voiced by some of the best voices (Robin Williams for the Genie, Scott Weinger for Aladdin, Linda Larkin for Jasmine and Jonathan Freeman for Jafar), the animation is an enchantment to watch by both children and adults.
The movie tells the story of an orphan named Aladdin, who has no home or means to lead a decent life. He, along with his only friend and support, the monkey Abu, has to steal food in order to survive. In spite of his lack of education and his minor thefts, Aladdin is endowed with great intelligence and a loving heart. This caring heart is touched by the beautiful appearance of Jasmine, a beautiful girl bearing royal blood in her veins.
Jasmine is the king’s daughter. Brought up with everything she wants at her disposal, Jasmine is denied the most important thing: the freedom to choose who she wants to marry. Thus, while princes from all over the world come to ask for her hand, Jasmine seeks true love and none of her suitors is able to give her.
The two heroes of the story meet each other at the local market and love unites them from the moment their eyes connect. Yet, the Princess is prohibited to marry anything else than a prince.
The adventure starts when Aladdin is accused of theft and imprisoned. Jasmine asks to be freed, but Jafar, the Grand Vizier and the main antagonist, tells her that Aladdin has just been executed. Disguised as an old man, Jafar sends Aladdin to the Cave of Wonders to get a magical oil lamp. The lamp contains a genie which could grant the lamp’s possessor three wishes. Aladdin gets the lamp with the help of Abu and of a magic, flying carpet. Sensing the danger in Jafar’s subterfuge, Abu manages to prevent the Vizier from taking the lamp. Rather, the lamp goes to Aladdin and the genie grants him the 3 wishes.
The first wish Aladdin has is to be a prince, so that he can propose to Jasmine. While his wish is granted, Jafar will do everything he can to get the lamp and Jasmine for himself. He thus exiles Aladdin on a deserted isle and imprisons Jasmine and his father with the sole purpose of killing them so that he can govern the kingdom alone. Yet, as a true hero Aladdin rescues the king and the princess, defeats Jafar and wins the hand of Jasmine for ever. As a true hero possessing a noble heart, Aladdin frees the genie from the lamp with his third wish.
The animation is rich in romance and adventure, with a great storyline enjoyed by children and adults alike. Furthermore, the soundtrack adds charm to the movie, introducing the viewer to a fantastic world rich with music.
Because of the popularity of the movie, Aladdin, the Genie and Jasmine costumes have always been bestsellers at Halloween. Aladdin is a well made Disney animation movie that will give children something to dream about and reminds adults that wishes can come true, as long as they never give up fighting for them.
